Malamuri Spritz & Pittura at Disiu, Gela
I’ve been to Disiu’s Malamuri Spritz & Pittura evenings twice already, and each one has been completely different.
Each evening has its own painting theme. The first time we painted a colourful Vespa, and the group was mostly women. I ordered an Aperol Spritz, which arrived decorated with gummies and marshmallows. Definitely not something you see every day! Alongside the drinks we were served chips, nuts, and thin ribbon pasta with basil, toasted breadcrumbs, and almonds (tagliolino con basilico, muddica e mandorle).
The second evening was themed around the iconic Fiat 500 and attracted a more mixed crowd, with more men joining in. The aperitivo included a choice of a spritz, a glass of wine, or a non-alcoholic cocktail, served with filled savoury croissants and sides.
Both evenings cost €20 per person, including the painting activity, food, and drink.
What I really enjoy is that everyone naturally slows down. There are no expectations to create a masterpiece—just paint, chat, laugh, and enjoy the evening. Even my 9-year-old son became completely absorbed in his painting, which says a lot. It’s a lovely activity for adults and children alike.
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the lady leading the ceramic workshop is incredibly friendly and encouraging. It’s one of those evenings that leaves you smiling on the walk home.
I’m still in Gela, so there’s a good chance I’ll be back for a third evening before I leave.
